Common Questions

Why the Orthopaedic Foundation Learning Academy?+

The Orthopaedic Foundation Learning Academy is the continuing medical education division of the Orthopaedic Foundation for Active Lifestyles, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Anchored by Manhattan's largest cutting-edge bioskills facility, the Learning Academy delivers intensive, hands-on fresh-tissue cadaver labs that translate clinical theory into elite tactile proficiency. All qualifying courses award continuing education credit toward state licensure and board requirements.

Does the Orthopaedic Foundation Learning Academy offer continuing education credit?+

Yes. Accreditation is determined on a course-by-course basis. Learning Academy programs are designed to award:

  • AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ (for physicians and advanced practice providers)
  • BOC Credits (for certified athletic trainers)
  • PT Contact Hours (state-specific physical therapy credits)

Note: Credit totals may include required online preparatory modules. Full compliance with mandatory watch times and passing scores on associated assessments and required attendance for live course segments is required before final course certificates are issued.

What makes the Orthopaedic Foundation Learning Academy courses different?+

We don't just teach — we train. The Learning Academy uses fresh-frozen cadaveric specimens for realistic tactile feedback, strictly caps lab enrollment for maximum hands-on repetition, and features well-renowned faculty who actively perform these procedures.

What specialties does the Learning Academy cover?+

We provide advanced clinical and procedural training across the shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand, knee, hip, foot & ankle, spine, and more. Our courses are tailored for orthopedic surgeons, sports medicine physicians, APPs, physical therapists, and athletic trainers. Don't see what you need? We are always expanding our curriculum — reach out to suggest a custom or upcoming topic.

How do I register for a Learning Academy Course?+

Browse our course catalog, select your lab, and complete your enrollment online. Because our fresh-tissue labs are strictly capped, seats fill quickly. We highly recommend joining our mailing list to receive upcoming courses.

What is the Orthopaedic Foundation Learning Academy's cancellation or transfer policy?+

Because our fresh-tissue labs are strictly capped and specimens are secured in advance, cancellations made within 45 days of the course are non-refundable. However, we do allow registrations to be transferred to a colleague or applied to a future course date with at least 45 days' notice. Any cancellation made prior to the 45-day window will be issued a refund subject to a 10% cancellation fee.

What do I need to bring to the bioskills lab?+

The Learning Academy provides all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including gowns, gloves, etc. as needed. We recommend wearing comfortable clothing or scrubs; closed-toe shoes are strictly required inside the lab area. Changing rooms are available on-site.

Do you offer custom or private group training?+

Yes. In addition to our scheduled continuing education courses, our state-of-the-art facility is available for private corporate events, medical device launches, and customized healthcare organization workshops. Contact us at spetterson@ofals.org to discuss your group's specific needs.
